MAMP is a simple, free way to play around with WordPress without worrying about hosting, or even having a reliable internet connection. The content in the video and the post are the same so feel free to choose whichever works best for you.

  1. Download MAMP from MAMP.org
  2. During installation select ‘custom’ and uncheck MAMP Pro install
  3. Once install is complete launch MAMP
  4. Click start servers
  5. In preferences check start servers when MAMP starts
  6. I recommend using NGNX and moving the MAMP folder to your documents folder, but this is based on preference or the type of server you ultimately will run on.
  7. Open the start page if it didn’t open automatically and choose tools > PHP myAdmin
  8. Click create new database and give the database the name of your website.
  9. Download the latest version of WordPress from WordPress.org
  10. Unzip it and rename the folder to the name of your site.
  11. Place this folder into you MAMP folder
  12. In your browser go to local host /site name
  13. Follow the WordPress install prompts remember to put _db when it asks for a database
  14. The site is local, but I recommend using a strong password regardless. It’s easy to forget to change the password to something secure when it comes time to move it to the web.
  15. Save your username and password in a note or password vault
  16. Go to sitename/wp-admin and copy and paste those credentials
  17. Tada! Your site is up and running.

Keep in mind this site is only accessible by you from your computer. Once you have everything to your liking, you will need to find a place to host your site and transfer it. Look for future content walking through that process.
